The eleventh breed in our dog of the day series is the Wirehaired Dachshund!
Dachshunds actually come in two sizes – standard and miniature – and three types of coat: smooth, wirehaired and longhaired. Unlike the other types of dachshund, the wirehaired variety sports an adorable beard and eyebrows that are reminiscent of some of the terrier breeds!
Since we’re owned by dachshunds ourselves, this is one of our favorite breeds. They’re determined (some might say stubborn) little hunting dogs that were bred in Germany more than 300 years ago to hunt badgers (“dachshund” means “badger hound” in German). Today, the Dachshund is one of the top 10 most popular breeds in the US!
