The 31st breed in our dog of the day series is the Pyrenean Shepherd!
This breed’s name comes directly from its job – it has herded sheep in the Pyrenees Mountains in Southern France for centuries. Just two dogs are enough to manage a flock of 1000 sheep! They come in two coat types (Rough-Faced and Smooth-Faced), and they range in shades of fawn to copper and charcoal to silver.
The Pyrenean Shepherd became known outside of the mountains during WWI when they assisted French troops as couriers, guards, and search and rescue dogs.
A military officer in charge of war dogs once called the Pyrenean Shepherd “the most intelligent, the most cunning, the most able, and the fastest” of all the breeds used.
