The 23rd breed in our dog of the day series is the Boerboel!
The Boerboel is a large, strong working dog from South Africa! Its name actually translates to mean “farm dog,” and its docked tail might have roots in its role as a farm protector in its home country. The short tail might have been a practical feature so that the Boerboel could evade monkeys, particularly dextrous baboons.
South African legends spoke of Boerboels vanquishing lions; that’s unlikely, however, they were strong and lithe enough to take on a smaller feline like the leopard on occasion.
