The 20th breed in our dog of the day series is the Bulldog!
Bulldogs are amazing family pets because they often form strong bonds with children. Known and loved for their gentle dispositions and adorable wrinkles, Bulldogs are also one of the most popular dog breeds in the U.S. They come in a variety of different colors: brindle, white, red, fawn, fallow or piebald.
Unfortunately, they are thought to have originated in the British Isles to fight (the name “bull” came from their connection with bull baiting). When dog fighting became illegal in England in 1835, dog fanciers set out to preserve the breed by eliminating the ferocious fighting characteristics, leaving us with the sweet and lovable dogs we know today. Fun fact: Presidents Harding and Coolidge both had Bulldogs!
